The mNACTEC Territorial System took part in the Cattedrali del Mare International Accord which was held on 3 October in the former electricity generating station in Buggerru, Sardinia , for the presentation of the book Cattedrali dell'archeologia industriale costiera and to promote the territorial cultural system.

Mines of Buggerru

The Accord, organised by the Consorzio del Parco Geominerario, Storico e Ambientale della Sardegna was devoted to the former mining towns of Buggerru and Argentiera and to the networks promoting the territorial cultural system. The event formed part of the Cattedrali del Mare project which, by means of a series of conferences on local topics, proposes making a journey that includes a visit to the industrial heritage along the Italian coastline.
First the book was presented, an event which included the participation of the co-authors of the book's Sardinian chapter and that of various representatives of the local institutions. Francesco Calzolaio, the scientific director of the Cultura 2000 programme, drew attention to the book's aim more to identify the local problems faced by industrial heritage than to provide operational solutions.
Later on there was a presentation of the various territorial cultural system networks. Jaume Matamala, the executive director of the mNACTEC, presented the territorial system of the Museu de la Ciència i de la Tècnica de Catalunya and this was followed by a contribution from Anna Garcia of the Museu del Ciment Asland in Castellar de n'Hug who described the project undertaken in the former Asland cement factory. The debate was an opportunity for all those participating, local experts, the other authors of the book and international experts, to consider the instruments needed to create a European network of coastal eco-museums.

Museu de Ciències Naturals

The Museu de Ciències Naturals de Barcelona (Barcelona Natural Sciences Museum), together with the Royal Belgian Natural History Institute, the Aarhus Natural History Museum in Denmark, the Natural History Museum of Hungary and ECSITE (the European Network of Science Centres and Museums) is developing and promoting an on-line database for use by natural history museums and European science centres. This database, called EXTRA (EXhibitions TRAvelling), is currently in the development phase as part of the e-CASTEX project which is financed by the European Union Science and Society Programme.
EXTRA will contain information regarding travelling exhibitions, collections, specimens, objects, models, exhibition modules, images and sounds, amongst others. The information will come from European centres and science museums and will indicate all the things a centre would like to hire, borrow or lend to other centres. EXTRA should be up, running and available to all from May this year.
The aim of this “electronic catalogue” is not only to promote the movement of exhibitions and related materials but also to strengthen the ties and establish networks between institutions and staff devoted to raising awareness about science.
The long-term administration and maintenance of the EXTRA database will be the responsibility of ECSITE in order to guarantee its permanence and to ensure that its community of users continues to grow.
