Territorial culture networks in Venice Lagoon

A territorial culture network can become an instrument for protection, raising of awareness and for improving heritage created by the community that lives and works there. Spread all over the place, there are a large number of unique landscapes, museums and places. With this in mind, the interpretation routes created in the territory offer a continual sequence between landscape and museum, in the sense that they discover and convey the complexity of a valued and fragile land.

In order to define a methodology applied to sustainable tourism, the “Venti di Cultura” Association has proposed an initiative for an interpretative route of the natural and cultural heritage in Venice Lagoon.

Last July, an experimental event involving the local authorities, museums and tourist operators was carried out. The proposal started in the river Piave and crossed the lake from north to south, as far as the Brenta canal. The first day took in the area from the Land Reclamation Museums of San Donà to the Archaeological Museum of Altino and Torcello. The second day was dedicated to the beaches, beginning with the potential museums of Forte Treporti and Lazareto Vecchio, visiting the new museums, Malamocco and Pellestrina, as far as the structured civic museum of Chioggia.

The third day covered the oil pipeline as far as the river Brenta, where two towns and museums were visited: the Museum of Villa Badoer, in Dolo, and the Footwear Museum, in Villa Foscarini-Rossi, the different exhibitions and landscapes of Sta.Crossing, where the feeling of belonging to the water-based productive and civic community was reinforced. The major routes of cultural heritage, related to the territory and dedicated to both inhabitants and tourism, have been generated in the Lagunalonga museum. The events and museums have become a meeting point for all those who participate in Lagunalonga, be it through the territory or the lagoon.

As a result of the experience, next year a guided tour will be created, open to the public, locals and tourists, of these museums of natural heritage, classic archaeology, industry, real and movable culture, where each and every one, individually and together, form a continent to explore with the same curiosity as our children, at the zero level of Lagunalonga, and with the dedication of those who have informed us about it. The result is that exhibitions and collections are going to emerge from behind closed doors to welcome visitors to Lagunalonga in 2010.
