The mainframe or central computer is the most modern set of objects which has been overhauled from the restoration workshop as part of the programme of conservation and restoration of the objects shown on the occasion of the forthcoming opening of the mNACTEC exhibition The Enigma of the Computer. The computer, which is made up of eight objects, including two processors, two storage units, a robot administrator of magnetic tape cartridges, a communications controller and a channel converter, was built in the nineties to manage the data of large companies. Some can still be found in operation. It is in an excellent state of conservation, and its task has been more one of documentation and control. It has been vacuum cleaned to remove surface dust and occasionally there is a second phase of wet cleaning with distilled water. |
